Clean and maintain your bed linen

Geoffrey G

There's nothing better than slipping into fresh sheets before bed . You still need to know how to clean and maintain your bed linen ! In addition, properly maintained bed linen will better resist the wear and tear of time. Here are some tips for properly cleaning and maintaining bed linen.

Generally speaking, the maximum temperature that should not be exceeded for washing a piece of bedding is indicated on its label. However, here are some tips for determining this washing temperature depending on the material in which the laundry is made:

  • For cotton bed linen : Cotton bed linen supports machine washing very well. It is possible to wash it at 40°C, but to eliminate bacteria, the ideal is to opt for a temperature of 60 to 90°C . However, please note that only white cotton bed linen can be washed at 90°C. Those made of colored cotton could risk fading at this temperature.
  • For polyester bed linen : Polyester bed linen is quite strong. It can be washed at a temperature of 40 to 60°C without risk of deterioration.
  • For silk bed linen : Silk is a fairly fragile material usually reserved for high-end bed linen. Its washing temperature must never exceed 30°C and laundry must be done with the “delicate laundry” function of the washing machine.
  • For linen bed linen : Ideal for summer bed linen, linen can be washed at a maximum temperature of 60°C.
  • For flannel bed linen : Flannel is often intended for winter bed linen. Its washing temperature should also not exceed 60°C.
  • For jersey bed linen : Frequently used to design baby bed linen, jersey must also be washed at a temperature which does not exceed 60°C.
  • For percale bed linen : Percale is a more fragile material compared to cotton. However, it can be washed at a temperature which does not exceed 60°C.

In the event that cotton bed linen must be washed with other more delicate materials, the ideal is to choose the lowest temperature.

How often to wash your bed linen?

Every night, we spend an average of 8 hours in bed. During this time, the body sweats and evacuates an average of 40 cl of sweat. To allow the bed to maintain good hygiene and thus avoid unpleasant odors, the proliferation of bacteria or even mites, it is strongly recommended to change the bed linen regularly . So, in summer, when temperatures are high, the ideal is to wash your bed linen every week at most . In winter, however, it is possible to carry out this task every 2 weeks.

What detergent should you use to wash your bed linen?

Washing bed linen does not require special detergent, whether for sheets, covers or pillowcases. An ordinary product can do the trick very well. However, it is essential to respect the dose indicated by the detergent manufacturer depending on the number of kilos of bed linen to be cleaned. For babies' or children's bed linen , however, it is best to opt for organic products.
